We are active in the Green Schools Initiative and currently have four flags as follows:

Thank you to Kinsale Men's Shed for making our new raised beds. Fifth and sixth class have been busy planting flowers for pollinators and vegetables in the new garden area.
We are delighted with Piluca Garcia's plans for developing our school garden, which has become terribly overgrown and unusable in recent times. Miss Kingston, Ms Nestor and Miss Giles, along with P.A. chairperson, Ann Harte, were delighted to be invited to the Kinsale Further Education College to hear her presentation to her tutors. The P.A. will be funding the development of the garden. This process will begin with creating a wild flower area with a path.
Our Next Flag
Work will begin on earning our next green flag in September. The new committee will focus on Global Citizenship - Litter. The committee will comprise children from 3rd to 6th class. A second Tidy Towns committee will be elected with children from Infants to 6th class working to keep our school neat and tidy.
Representatives from Kinsale Tidy Towns and Supervalu visited St Multose on Wednesday 15th May and gifted us with a selection of flowers and plants. We hope to further promote biodiversity in our school, adding to the great work our Green Team began last year when we were awarded our Green Flag for Biodiversity. The Tidy Towns team will return in September to see our garden. our progress.
Walk to school week
In May children were encouraged to use green modes of transport to get to school.
To link the biodiversity and travel flags, the whole school went on a nature walk, identifying plants and creatures we discovered along the way. We noted areas of litter and discussed our findings back at school.
Tessa, Joshua and Zoë had a lovely lunch before receiving our 5th green flag at the An Taisce awards on May 2nd.
Our much postponed Day of Action took place on 15th March. The infants and 5th and 6th were busy planting flowering plants. Miss Curtin’s class went on a mini-beast hunt while 3rd and 4th began work on renovations to the bug hotel. Mr. Quin’s class built a wood pile habitat as well as making a bat and bird house. It was a really cold day but everyone kept warm doing the activities. We home all our efforts will make our school grounds even more appealing to wildlife.
During the recent snowfall children noted animal activity on their walks. Paw prints by foxes, rabbits, various birds and even a badger were identified. Food and water was put out for the birds. Robins, blackbirds, finches were among the birds noted. 5th and 6th class wrote reports on their Snow Days, referring specifically to the impact on the animals and birds. They discussed the challenges for farmers trying to care for their flocks.
On 13th February past pupil, Sean Collins, enthralled everyone with his 1st prize winning project from this year’s Young Scientist competition. Sean’s project was all about his research into microplastics and their impact. This was a great achievement and we are all very proud and inspired by Sean’s work.
In early February the Plastic Free Kinsale campaign was launched and we were delighted to have Dr. Tara Shine come and talk to us all about it. We discussed how we could make a difference and began work on becoming a plastic free school. Oliver and Holly wrote wonderful reports on her visit and what we learned. You can read these and see photos of our workshop on the notice board.
Junior & Senior Infants Biodiversity Projects
Coastal and Woodland animals/mammals. Junior and Senior infants focused on eight different native animals and mammals. We researched and wrote a fact file on each one. Our main focus however was to find out about the threats which these native species face and the policies and practices that are in place to protect them. Pupils worked in groups of two and each pair wrote, sketched and constructed our final project. The animals/mammals we looked at were peregrine falcon, red squirrel, basking shark, long eared owl, thorn-back ray, common lizard, otter and the pine martyn.
Well done to all the junior and senior infant pupils on a wonderful final display. We learned so much about our country's biodiversity.
2nd & 3rd Class Bio-diversity Blog
2nd and 3rd class have recently created a project based on Native Irish trees. The class was grouped to allow each group learn about a certain Irish tree. Each group then researched information about their given tree and presented their information with writing and drawings of the tree. Some of the trees researched were the Willow, the Oak, Ash, Hawthorn and many more. The information was then compiled in one big project and each group presented the information that they gathered in order that all groups would hear about each tree. Children shared information such as how tall the tree can grow, how long it can live for, where it lives to live and presented drawings of the leaves.
3rd & 4th Class Biodiversity project
As part of our work towards our Green Flag, we researched bog lands and rainforests. We learned about these habitats in detail and the various threats they face.
5th & 6th Class Biodiversity Projects
We read about invasive flora and fauna using the field guide from the Invasive Species Ireland website. It was an eye-opener to realise how many their were and how the affect the ecosystem into which they’ve been introduced. In groups, the pupils researched the features of the plants and creatures. They discovered how the species might have been introduced and discussed why this might have happened. They wrote descriptions and made drawings. They discovered how each one has affected the biodiversity of the area in which it exists, including the local area where relevant.
Each classroom took on a biodiversity project to show how much they’ve learned about the them. The completed projects make a wonderfully informative display. Don’t forget to come and take a look. Ms. Nestor’s room learned about native Irish animals. Miss Curtin’s room focused on the important pollination role of butterflies and bees. Mr. Quin’s room identified native Irish trees as habitats. Miss Kingston’s classes studied boglands and their impact on biodiversity and the importance of conservation. The senior classes researched invasive species to Ireland and their devastating impact on biodiversity and native Irish flora and fauna.

Once 5th and 6th class had finished harvesting the vegetable patch, leaving behind enough for the mini-beasts which might visit from the nearby bug hotel, they dug up the beds and prepared them for the winter rest. The straw will provide protection and a habitat. The compost heap will be replenished, ready for replanting in late spring.
We are busy composting our apple cores, banana peels and shredded paper hand towels. These will be used to make our vegetable beds in the spring.
Our School Grounds
Junior and Senior Infants have been busy planting flowers with Michelle during Aistear. They have made a lovely display in our school garden.
The boys and girls are great at picking up litter during our lunch breaks.
Tidy Towns Award Night
Parents and pupils enjoyed the annual Kinsale Tidy Towns Awards Night in Actons Hotel on 20th November. The children collected their highly commended plaques and feasted on the delicious spread.
Biodiversity News 2017/2018:
We had a wonderful dog walk on Saturday 16th September. Grateful thanks to Joanne and Sully for hosting the event and providing human and doggy treats. The children pledged to be Green Dog Walkers and to ‘leave only paw prints behind’. Along the Scilly Walk, we collected rubbish and dog poo – we were dismayed to discover how much rubbish had been left behind! Thank you to Jane Connaughton for filming the event.
Biodiversity News 2016/2017:
In the autumn the committee surveyed each classes' understanding of biodiversity. Joshua, Honey and Tessa made charts of the findings.
Photo's of mini beasts and native creatures were pinned on our green schools notice board. The following questions were posed:
What is my name?
Where do I live?
What do I eat?
What might eat me?
How do I move?
Oliver and Zoe visited each classroom, later in the term, to see if the children could answer the questions.
During the winter term each class did a mapping excersise in the playground.
Junior Infants mapped tall, medium and short plants.
Senior Infants, 1st and 2nd classes mapped area's of biodiversity in the playground.
3rd and 4th classes identified trees and shrubs around the school.
5th and 6th classes identified areas that we could work on to improve biodiversity.
In the spring each class designed a habitat.
Some classes designed bird houses, others homes for mini beasts while 5th and 6th class re-designed an area of the playground as they would wish it to be. There goal was to improve biodiversity.
In the summer term four of the classes took part in a biodiversity poster and slogan competition. The green school committee judged the entries. Congratulations to the class winners of the Biodiversity slogan and poster competition.
